Bè cứu sinh (Liferaft) là thiết bị cứu sinh cực kỳ quan trọng đối với mọi tàu hàng, tàu khách … khi di chuyển trên biển. Bè cứu sinh tự thổi phồng giúp cho việc cứu hộ nhanh chống hơn đảm bảo an toàn hơn. SOLAS chương III(*) cho ta biết chi tiết về chủng loại, số lượng bè cứu sinh phải trang bị cho tàu biển dựa trên kích cỡ và loại tàu.

Bè cứu sinh tự thổi thường được lắp gần khu vực tập trung (muster station), về mạn trái và mạn phải gần xuồng cứu sinh, và về phía mũi và lái của tàu. Vị trí lắp đặt thường phụ thuộc vào kích cỡ của tàu.
Bè cứu sinh được chứa trong một hộp chứa làm bằng sợi thủy tinh, kết hợp với khí nén áp suất cao để thổi phồng bè. Một bộ nhả thủy tĩnh (Hydrostatic Release Unit) nối hộp chứa bè với tàu, có tác dụng giải phóng bè khi tàu chìm vào nước.
